Vitality Fitness Assessment

The Vitality Fitness Assessment is made up of two parts - the first part measures your cardio-respiratory fitness and the second measures your strength and flexibility. Members 65 years and older will do a falls risk functional test.

The Vitality Fitness Assessment has been designed to give you an accurate and personalised understanding of your fitness. After the Vitality Fitness Assessment, your biokineticist will show you what you need to focus on in order to get fitter and stronger.

You can earn 1 000 Vitality points and up to 10 000 Vitality points depending on your fitness level.

VO2 Max Score

The most reliable measure of cardio fitness is VO2 max, measured in ml/kg/min. This is the maximum amount of oxygen that the heart, lungs and muscles use effectively during exercise. It reflects aerobic power and the body's ability to keep performing under strenuous activity for longer periods of time. A higher VO2 max indicates a higher level of fitness and endurance.

The points you earn from your Vitality Fitness Assessment contribute towards your annual cap of 30 000 fitness points.

The Vitality Fitness Assessment takes about 45 minutes to complete.

The Vitality Fitness Assessment costs R533.60. You will need to pay for the assessment upfront. If you are on a Medical Scheme plan that covers the cost, you can claim this amount from day-to-day benefits if you have funds availabe. If you are Discovery Life policyholder, you will need to pay for your assessment upfront. If you are a qualifying Discovery Bank client and have Discovery Miles available, you can use this to pay for your assessment.

Members with a heart or metabolic condition, or pregnant members, can do the sub-maximal fitness test on condition that they have written consent from their doctor.

Members who are unable to cycle or use the treadmill can do an arm ergometer test at certain biokineticists instead of the bike test.

You can earn 1 000 Vitality points for doing the assessment and up to 10 000 points based on your fitness level. Points will show on your Vitality Points Tracker within seven days. The points you earn from your Vitality Fitness Assessment contribute towards your yearly cap of 30 000 fitness points.

If your results are out of range you have the ability to complete the assessment again later in the year. Points will be awarded based on the best result in the year. You will only be awarded additional Vitality points if your test is performed at least 90 days apart. This allows sufficient time for you to address your underlying risk factors and take steps towards improving your results.

Book an appointment at a registered biokineticist in the Vitality Wellness Network or at your nearest Discovery Store. Take your Discovery Health membership card or proof of your Vitality membership, exercise gear and R533.60 with you to your assessment. You will need to pay for the assessment upfront. If you are on a Medical Scheme plan that covers the cost, you can claim this amount from your day-to-day benefits if you have funds available.If you are a Discovery Life policyholder, you will need to pay for your assessment upfront.
