Flu vaccination reminder
Getting a flu shot is an important precaution to protect ourselves and our loved ones from flu related infections and complications. Most people who get flu experience mild illness with symptoms such as:
- A dry cough
- Headaches
- Muscle and joint pains
- A sore throat and runny nose.
For others, the flu can result in complications, which can lead to severe illness, worsening of existing health problems or pneumonia, requiring hospital admission.
Top reasons for getting vaccinated
- The flu vaccine will help to lower your risk of becoming sick with flu. Although the flu vaccine doesn't offer complete protection against getting the flu, it does lower your chances of getting the infection. And, if you do get flu, you'll recover faster. This means you're not infectious for as long, which helps limit the spread of infection to others.
- It is still the most effective way to protect you against flu infection and its complications. Flu vaccination has been proven to prevent flu-related complications that result in hospitalisation. Getting vaccinated protects from these flu-related complications.
- The flu is not the same as the common cold. Influenza (flu) is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system - your nose, throat and lungs. In higher-risk groups, the flu can lead to serious, life threatening complications, including pneumonia and worsening of existing health problems.
- Think about those you love. You getting vaccinated will lower their chances of becoming sick. Think especially about those who you live with who are at high risk of severe flu illness. This includes infants younger than six months old who are too young to get a flu injection.
